Act before the fuel circulates

What to do immediately

  1. Do not start the engineIf it has not been started, leave it switched off and keep the key away from the ignition where practical.
  2. Stop safely if already drivingPull over as soon as it is safe, switch off and do not attempt to restart the vehicle.
  3. Call with the detailsTell us your location, registration, fuel added, correct fuel and whether the engine ran.

Common mix-ups

Different fuels. The same first move.

Do not start the engine. The sooner contaminated fuel is isolated, the better.

01

Petrol in diesel

Petrol reduces the lubrication a diesel fuel system depends on. Starting or driving can circulate the mix through pumps and injectors.

02

Diesel in petrol

Diesel is heavier and burns differently in a petrol engine. The vehicle may be hard to start, smoke or run poorly if the fuel circulates.

03

AdBlue contamination

AdBlue is not fuel. In a diesel tank it can crystallise and corrode fuel-system components, so keep the ignition off and call for advice.
