Started the engine after using the wrong fuel?

Why starting the engine changes the response
Before the engine runs, much of the contaminated mixture may remain in the tank. Once the fuel pump and engine operate, that mixture can move through lines, filters, pumps and injectors. The extent varies by vehicle and by how long it ran.
This does not mean damage should be assumed. It means the technician needs more information and may recommend a more involved flush, diagnostic checks or recovery if the vehicle cannot be dealt with safely at its location.
Symptoms worth reporting
Tell the call handler what the vehicle did without trying to reproduce the symptom. Small details can help the technician prepare.
- How far and for how long the vehicle travelled
- Whether it lost power, misfired, smoked or stopped
- Any dashboard warning messages or lights
- Whether you tried to restart it and what happened
- The approximate amounts of correct and incorrect fuel
Will a fuel drain still help?
Removing the contaminated fuel is still an important part of the response. A mobile unit can often drain and flush the vehicle at a suitable location, but running symptoms may need further assessment after clean fuel is restored.

How far can I drive after putting in the wrong fuel?
There is no safe distance to recommend. If you realise the mistake while driving, stop as soon as it is safe, switch off and do not restart.
Should I try starting the car again?
No. Repeated starts can circulate more contaminated fuel. Leave the engine off and tell the technician what happened.
Can the vehicle still be fixed at the roadside?
It may be possible to drain and flush it on site, but this depends on the location, vehicle, fuel mix and symptoms. Some cases need recovery or further workshop diagnosis.
