Diesel in a petrol car: immediate advice
If diesel has gone into a petrol vehicle, do not start it. If the engine is already running, stop somewhere safe, switch off and do not restart. The contaminated fuel can often be removed by a mobile fuel-drain unit.

What diesel can do in a petrol vehicle
Petrol engines are designed to ignite a petrol-and-air mixture with spark plugs. Diesel has different combustion properties. When enough diesel reaches the engine, the vehicle may misfire, smoke, lose power, refuse to start or stop running.
The outcome is not identical for every car or every quantity of fuel. That is why the sensible first response is simple: do not start the engine, and give the technician accurate information about what happened.
How a mobile diesel-in-petrol drain works
The technician first confirms the vehicle, fuel mix and whether the engine has run. The contaminated fuel is removed with mobile equipment. The system is flushed where appropriate, then enough correct fuel is added to help get the vehicle moving.
A roadside drain is not a promise that every consequence of driving on the wrong fuel can be repaired on site. If the car still runs poorly or shows a fault after the fuel has been removed, further diagnosis may be needed.

Is diesel in petrol less serious than petrol in diesel?
The risks are different, but neither mix should be ignored. Keep the engine off and have the fuel mix assessed rather than trying to drive the vehicle.
Can diesel in a petrol car be drained where it is parked?
Often it can, provided the location is safe, accessible and the property or forecourt operator permits the work. The team will assess this when you call.
What if the petrol car will not start?
Stop attempting to start it. Repeated attempts can continue moving contaminated fuel through the system. Tell the technician what happened and any symptoms you noticed.
